Course Description:
This two-day course aims to provide an overview of the transdisciplinary nature of assessment and treatment within the Bobath Concept.
Learning Objectives:
At the tend of the two-day course you will:

Discuss the basic principles that underpin the Bobath approach to treatment.

Understand the interdisciplinary nature of assessment and treatment using the Bobath Approach.

Discuss the relevance of an understanding of child development to the treatment of cerebral palsy.

Identify the features of spastic hypertonus and dyskinesia and the principles of treatment of children with these clinical features.

Demonstrate safe handling on a person with typical tone and movement and understand how this can be applied to treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
Course Activities:
The course will explore aspects such as classification of cerebral palsy and principles of treatment in a series of Tutor led treatment demonstrations and discussions in conjunction with lecture and video PowerPoint presentations.

Opportunities are given for handling of other participants to understand more about typical movement and how we can influence this and apply the techniques to the treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
Due to the introductory nature of this course, there will not be an opportunity for practical handling of children with cerebral palsy by course participants.
Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy Course (2 days)
Who is this course for?
This two-day course is suitable for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech & language therapists who have a specific interest, or who are involved in the treatment and management of older children/adolescence and young people with cerebral palsy in the transition period from school to adult lifestyle. The course is also relevant if you are a therapist working with pre-pubescent children, giving insight into problems that may occur in adolescence and helping with forward planning of treatment and management.
Course Description:
This course is designed to highlight the changes that take place through adolescence, and how these may affect young people with cerebral palsy. You will experience a focus on treatment and management strategies appropriate for adolescents and young adults during their transition into adult life.
Course Activities:
This course uses lectures, client demonstrations, and practical sessions to explore management issues in this age group.

IMPORTANT: Please wear comfortable clothing and bring sports wear (i.e. shorts, vest tops) for practical sessions.
Aim:
To review specific factors that impact on the activity and participation of adolescents with cerebral palsy and explore therapeutic management throughout transition.
Objectives:
The course participants will have:

Identified and discussed specific changes in clinical presentation associated with cerebral palsy in adolescence and during the transitional years.

Identified which factors may contribute to further deterioration in people with this condition during adolescence and explore specific therapeutic interventions.

Describe how perceptual, cognitive and communication difficulties may impinge on participation both socially and economically and discuss strategies to improve the potential for full participation in daily life.

This two-day course introduces the course participants to the assessment and management of adults with cerebral palsy based on the Bobath Concept.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the two-day course you will:

Understand how the clinical presentation has evolved from childhood to adolescence to adulthood.

Identify and understand the symptoms associated with post-impairment syndrome and explore management strategies.

Explore hands-on and hands-off strategies to improve the quality of activities and participation for adults with cerebral palsy.
Course Activities:
The emphasis is on interactive learning and the course involves PowerPoint presentations, treatment demonstrations of adults with cerebral palsy, group work and practice of therapeutic handling other course attendees to understand more about typical movement.
Therapy Assistants Course (2 days)

This course provides an overview of cerebral palsy and how we approach treatment using the Bobath Concept. This is very much a practical approach, which looks at how the child performs their daily activities (walks, moves on the floor, talks, plays etc) and asks what happens as they do this (to their muscle tone and the range, speed, quality of movement) and asks why they cannot do certain activities.
You will hear lectures from a speech and language therapist who will invite you to think about play and about communication and how you can help children with cerebral palsy who may have difficulties in these areas.
